Overview

PATCH 40 faithfully recreates the Yamaha FX500 “Soft Focus” program, the hardware unit of choice behind the most iconic shoegaze albums of the 90s. Crank that mix up and turn even a simple guitar or synth line into a massive, ethereal wash.

The Yamaha FX500 is a legendary half-rack unit, but despite not being incredibly rare, finding one in perfect condition is a gamble. Even when you find a clean unit, the reality of using 1989 hardware in a modern workflow sets in quickly.

I learned this the hard way. I imported a unit from Japan, chasing that specific “Slowdive sound.” When it arrived, it looked quite good (at least it worked, haha), but the compromises were obvious: it was tricky to run in true stereo, it needed a separate power adaptor, and it occupied space. In fact, every time I turned it on I thought to myself: “please don’t die, I know nothing about how to fix you.” Besides that, trying to place it after my other plugins required a mess of cables and interface routing.

And then there was the sound itself. In isolation, the famous “Soft Focus” preset (Program 40) actually sounded… weird. A bit metallic and somewhat thin. I did some research and realized its magic came from how the compression, EQ, reverb, symphonic chorus and delay interacted to create a textured, nostalgic sound many of us are still after.

PATCH 40 was born from that realization. I decided to rebuild that signal chain digitally, component by component. I wanted the sound of my Japanese unit, but with the ability to run it in stereo, place it anywhere in the chain, automate it without a headache, and add some cool features.

I am very happy to share the result with you: it still has the authentic, slightly weird, yet beautiful magic of the original, refined with new features that help you find your own sounds — and simply have fun.

Features

• The full Program 40 chain — compressor, EQ, pre-delay, plate reverb and symphonic chorus in the original order, voiced to the FX500’s stock values.
• EMT-style plate reverb — dense, smooth diffusion with a warm, tape-like top end. Decay runs from 0.5 to 10 seconds, and Room Size scales the space from a tight plate to an open hall.
• The asymmetric stereo delay — independent left and right delay times with their own feedback and low-pass filter; this is where the Soft Focus width comes from. Push the feedback to the top and the loop holds in infinite sustain.
• Symphonic chorus — the modulation stage that makes the tail swim, with depth and stereo width on the panel.
• Eight factory presets — Factory Default keeps the authentic Program 40 sound; Ambient Wash, Tight Space, Rhythmic Echo, Lush Stereo, Dark Atmosphere, Ping Pong Delay and Shimmer Verb branch out from there. Your own presets save and recall too.
• Themes — PATCH 40 comes equipped with themes true to the original rack unit and others inspired by some of the genre-defining bands. You can even create custom themes, share them, and truly make the plugin your own.
• Session-ready — every control automates cleanly (the mix is zipper-free), and the delays can lock to your host tempo.
