Overview

SLEEPWALKER is a faithful emulation of the Electronic Audio Experiments Hypersleep — an analog, solid-state BBD reverberator built on the obsolete MN3011 bucket-brigade device. It makes gritty, metallic, fluttering “non-reverb”: a smeared, low-fidelity decay closer to reflections off metal and tile than any natural room — liminal rather than epic. Its defining trick is an LFO that modulates the delay clock, animating the six-tap tail into chorus, vibrato and quasi-flanger textures, the haunting sound of a room changing size in real time, and seasick pitch-warping at full depth.

A powered-down unit in Collection IV — The Rack Archive.

Features

  • Six staggered taps — A clock-driven 6-tap bucket-brigade line, from blurry slapback to long, separated, smeared reflections.
  • Clock-modulated tail — An exponential-response triangular LFO modulates the delay clock: subtle animation at low depth, warped pitch-bending at high.
  • Runaway feedback — From short analog-delay character through comb and resonant textures and fluttery ringing tails to full self-oscillation.
  • Circuit-informed — BBD companding and bandwidth limiting, the brighter V2 filter voicing and soft overload, plus modern conveniences the analog format couldn’t offer.
